FHSU Esports announces Spring 2023 Minecraft architectural design contest winners

Special to Tiger Media Network

FHSU Esports is thrilled to announce the winners of the Spring 2023 Minecraft Architectural Design Competition. Over the course of three weeks, FHSU students competed in a survival Minecraft world to design a campus residence for Victor E. Tiger, following the campus architectural theme to fit in with other prominent builds on campus. The contest required contestants to gather all necessary resources and manufacture special blocks from scratch, without access to the creative interface.

Lead judge Troy Steiner, FHSU facilities planning architect, assisted with the contest and was amazed by the creativity and attention to detail displayed by the contestants. Associate Professor in Informatics and assistant judge Kevin Shaffer noted, “The contestants clearly did their homework. The designs featured appropriate architectural elements consistent with our campus buildings’ texture, color and style.”

The entries were evaluated based on adherence to architectural style as well as the use of color, texture, balance, line, repetition and detail leading to the overall design.

Taking the top prize in this year’s competition is Mollie Houtz, a junior majoring in Secondary Education and Mathematics. Her design for the Victor E. Tiger Residence incorporated sandstone, deepslate and terracotta with indoor furnishings such as a marble kitchen, entertainment room, and entrance foyer with black and gold carpeting. The outdoor design featured a full-size basketball court and a glazed terracotta infinity pool. The design balanced architectural style with both interior and exterior embellishments, using a complementary color palette.

Caden Sutter, a freshman in the NCKTC Gateway Transfer program, earned second place with a sandstone residence featuring a complimentary oak post and beam design. The judges were impressed with the repetition of patterns, contrasting textures, and interesting roofline.

The Grand Scale Award goes to Peyton Meitler, a sophomore majoring in Informatics, for his ambitious and impressive structure with remarkable attention to interior detail. Finally, the Creativity Award goes to Jackson Sinsel, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, for his unique polished sandstone residence hall featuring furnished interior rooms and domed atriums with a large FHSU marquee.

FHSU Esports would like to thank all contestants for their hard work and dedication, congratulating the winners on their exceptional designs. We look forward to seeing everyone back next fall for a new contest.
