Pieper fifth after four events in heptathlon at nationals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Fort Hays State track and field’s Matthew Pieper sits in fifth through four events of the heptathlon at the 2021 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. The senior collected 2,877 points on Thursday (March 11) and sits less than 100 points out of third place.

Pieper opened the day with a time of 7.22 in the 60m dash, fifth-fastest in the field, before clearing the second-longest distance in the long jump at 23-3.5. The Colby, Kan. native posted a top heave of 37-0.5 in the shot put before rounding out the day by clearing the 6-0.75 bar in the high jump. He came close to posting PRs in three of the four disciplines.

Pieper will wrap up competition with the final three events on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. Two other Tigers will be in action at the national meet on Friday, with Alexandra Hart competing in the high jump beginning at 4:30 p.m. and Lyric Holman running in the 60m dash prelims at 7:45 p.m.
