HILLSBORO, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-2 win at Tabor College on Thursday (Mar. 11). The Tigers took five of the six singles matches to come away with the victory after Tabor picked up the single team point in doubles action.
In doubles play, the No. 3 team of Aliyah Frederick and Kylie Aufdengarten blanked their opponent 6-0, but Tabor rallied for 6-4 and 6-3 victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions respectively to grab the first team point of the match.
Frederick and Aufdengarten put the Tigers in front in singles action, rolling to straight set victories. Frederick won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 position, then Aufdengarten followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 6 position.
Grace Holgerson put the Tigers up 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 position, but Tabor closed back within a point when Marisol Blair knocked off Sydney McAdoo at the No. 3 position 7-5, 6-3. Blair was the lone Tabor player to generate two points for her team on the day, since she was part of the No. 2 doubles team that won earlier.
Fiorella Mendez clinched the win for FHSU at the No. 2 position with a 7-5, 6-2 result. Stefany Stemmer had the tightest match in singles play at the No. 1 position. She outlasted Olivia Brubacher 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 by winning two of three tiebreaks.
The Tigers hit the road again on Monday (Mar. 15) for a match at Sterling College. First serve is scheduled for 2 pm.
