The Student Government Association held their second meeting of the Spring semester on February 7.
The senators began the meeting with the Executive Reports.
President Adam Schibi, in his report, mentioned that preparations for the Big Event are underway. He also announced that the theme for the next Homecoming is “Unleash the Tigers” and that the Center for Student Success will open in the Fall of 2021.
Vice President Kayelani Kirchbaum discussed the SGA Code of Conduct regarding absences. Both Treasurer Aaron Voss and Legislative Affairs Director Connor Mountford gave reports regarding the upcoming Higher Education Day. These reports were in reference to the logistics of the event, being as it requires senators to travel to Topeka.
Community Relations Director Jacki Dougherty expanded on Schibi’s earlier report of the Big Event. Dougherty announced that volunteer applications for the event are now open. She also said that student organizations have the potential to win a scholarship if they have a percentage of group members volunteering for the event.
Few committees gave reports during the meeting. Among those that did, Senator Kenton Lindsey of the Appropriations Committee mentioned that there are two bills within the committee at present, and Senator Brad DeMers of the Allocations Committee said that they have determined a date for an upcoming budget meeting.
Following the committee reports, Jaylinn Pfeifer was sworn in as a Senator represent Freshmen and KAMS students.
The open forum was dominated by discussion of the new FHSU website. Many senators mentioned that it was difficult to navigate while some pointed out that information from the previous website appeared to be missing.
Also during the open forum, the senators voted on who would sit on the Elections Committee. This committee is to be made up of seven people, chosen from the senators who are seniors or would not return the SGA the following semester. Senators voted onto the committee included President Schibi and Senator Lucy Partlow-Loyall.
Two appropriation bills were read following the open forum: one for an equipment request by TEECA and one for the Help Starts Here Learning Community to receive funding for a service trip to Denver.
The senators then voted on and passed a funding waiver for the Presidential Speaker Series, which brings speakers to campus and is free to students.
After other announcements by the senators, the meeting adjourned.
