HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 2-1 on the season by cruising past Central Christian (Kan.) on Wednesday night (Nov. 16) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. After putting up 33 points and a game-winning shot in the previous game, Rob Davis remained hot and scored 35 to lead the Tigers.
Davis did the majority of his damage in the first half with 24 points. In fact, he scored 24 of the team’s first 30 points. He hit four 3-point field goals in the first half, the last at the 6:16 mark giving him all 24 points inside the first 14 minutes of the game. He went on to add 11 points in the second half and finish just one point shy of his career high of 36. He shot 12-of-21 from the field, including a 5-of-9 effort beyond the 3-point line and a perfect 6-of-6 effort at the free-throw line.
Hadley Gillum also had a solid night offensively, tying his career high of 20 points that he set in the first game of this season. He finished 9-of-13 from the field with one 3-point field goal and a 1-of-2 effort at the free-throw line. He’s averaging 19 points per game so far this season.
The Tigers struggled shooting the ball early until seeing a late second-half surge. They finished at 44.9 percent as a team after hitting at just a 37.8 percent clip in the first half. FHSU dominated the glass by 25, outrebounding Central Christian 54-29. JaQuan Smith led the rebounding effort with 12, followed by Brady Werth with 11.
Kyler Kinnamon nearly reached a double-double with nine points and eight assists. All FHSU players that saw action scored on the night. As a team, FHSU hit eight 3-point field goals and shot 47.1 percent beyond the arc. FHSU shot 71 percent from the free-throw line, where it went 22-of-31.
Sean Guillory led Central Christian with 12 points, followed by Jubril Osagie with 11 points and Michael Gholston with 10. Sam Clayborn flirted with a double-double, adding nine points and seven assists.
The Tigers get a stern test on Saturday when Colorado School of Mines comes to Hays. The Orediggers are ranked No. 21 in the nation to open the 2016-17 season after finishing 24-8 last year. Game time is set for 4 pm.
