Hays, KS – The Fort Hays University Police chief, Ed Howell, has been invited to attend a national meeting held by the National Center for Campus Public Safety. Howell will be traveling to McKinney, Texas for the forum being held Nov. 15 and wrapping up Nov. 16. Campus police chiefs and safety officials from all over the nation will be attending Collin College campus for this forum.

Firearms have been the center of attention in the recent months with views on the topic ranging all over the spectrum. Concealed carry of firearms will be legal on Kansas campuses starting July 1, 2017. The state of Kansas is known for possessing traditional midwestern viewpoints; therefore many citizens of the state have no problem with firearms or conceal carry laws being implemented.

That being said, there is still concern with some about guns on college campuses. Several campuses across the nation have already allowed firearms on campus; officials from these campuses will report their campuses results.

An agency of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, funds the NCCPS. Howell’s costs for the trip will be covered by the NCCPS. The costs include travel, per-diem, and three nights of lodging expenses.
