HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State baseball dropped to 1-1 in MIAA play and 7-6 overall on Saturday (Feb. 27) after suffering a seven-inning, run-rule loss to Central Missouri by the score of 14-0. UCM improved to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA.
The Tiger offense struggled throughout the afternoon as they recorded just six hits and only seven runners reached base. All six of the Tiger hits were singles and they came off of six different Fort Hays State bats.
Central Missouri on the other hand had its offense clicking on all cylinders. The Mules recorded 11 hits, nine walks, a hit batter and a runner reaching by error as more than half the batters that stepped in the batter’s box reached base (22 of 43). UCM put up four runs in the third and fifth innings, and three run innings in the sixth and seventh.
Kyle Vogt took the loss on the mound and now sits 0-2 on the season. Vogt lasted 4.2 innings giving up eight earned runs on eight hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
Ethan Westphal went the distance for the Mules giving up just six hits, while striking out eight. Westphal moved to 1-1 this season.
The teams meet for the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday (Feb. 28) at 1 pm.
