Fort Hays State Volleyball hits the road for the third straight weekend, this time visiting the state of Colorado after trips to Michigan and Oklahoma. The Tigers play four matches in Denver over the weekend (Sept. 18-19) at Johnson & Wales University. The Tigers meet the host team twice this weekend, with matches against Benedictine-Mesa and York College sandwiched between.
The Tigers enter the weekend at 4-4 overall, all against NCAA Division II competition. All four opponents this weekend are NAIA affiliates. Johnson & Wales is 6-11 overall on the season, Benedictine-Mesa is 4-2, and York College is 6-10. Live stats and video of the matches will be available at the links below.
Fort Hays State went 3-1 last weekend at the Tiger/Savage Storm Classic in Oklahoma. FHSU won three matches in a row, knocking off Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Nazarene, and East Central before falling in a hard-fought five-set match against undefeated Cameron University.
Crystal Whitten leads the team in kills so far this year with 113, averaging 3.53 per set. She had double-doubles in kills and digs in all four matches last weekend in Oklahoma. As a result, she also leads the team in digs with 112, averaging 3.5 per set. Mallory Flagor is also averaging over three kills per set (3.16) with 101 kills so far. Rebekah Spainhour has been efficient in the middle, hitting .331 for the season so far with 75 kills.
After the four matches in Colorado this weekend, FHSU returns to Hays for its home and MIAA opener on Tuesday night against Nebraska-Kearney. The Lopers are currently ranked No. 15 in the nation.
