FHSU Women Win Third Straight, Blank Washburn 1-0 on the Road

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State continued its strong play late in the season with its fifth consecutive shutout on Friday, defeating Washburn 1-0 in Topeka, Kan.

The Tigers have won three straight, and six of their last eight, moving to 9-4-2 overall and 7-2-2 in conference play. With the win, FHSU officially clinched a berth to the MIAA Tournament next month, but will play for seeding in the final three matches of the regular season. FHSU remains tied with Central Oklahoma for third place in the MIAA standings after the Bronchos defeated Missouri Southern on Thursday evening.

Neither team found much separation in the first half, as Washburn fired five shots compared to FHSU’s four shots, with both teams putting two shots on goal.

After the scoreless first half, FHSU’s Hailey Davey scored in the 59th minute off an assist from Kylee Loneker. After retrieving a pass from Loneker, Davey hit a shot from 10 yards out on the right side of the box, finding the net for her third goal of the season. Loneker now has two assists on the year.

That was all the Tigers needed, closing out the final 30-plus minutes of play with strong defense to close the clean sheet victory. Kristen Thompson and the Tigers pushed individual and team season shutout records to 10, as Thompson once again played every minute in goal with two saves.

As a team, FHSU had 14 shots (seven on goal) for the afternoon, led individually by Davey’s five shots and Fiorella Fustagno’s three shots.

FHSU returns to action this Sunday (Oct. 26) at Emporia State. Game time in Emporia, Kan., is set for 2 p.m.
