Last weekend in Picken Hall, the Kelly Center held its first informational meeting for a new support group designed for students with physical and/or mental issues who seek extra support from their peers.
“It’s aimed at students who have any kind of a health problem that would impact their academic or social experience here at Fort Hays,” said Maureen Duffy, support group supervisor.
Duffy proposed the idea of this new group to help students with any sort of health problem find encouragement and support from their peers who would understand the kinds of issues and difficulties they may face every day.
“It’s actually pretty empowering to find someone that you can talk to who gets you,” Duffy said.
The group’s activities are to be determined solely by the members of the group. Anything brought up in the group’s discussion will remain confidential.
“We want to be open to the group evolving,” Duffy said.
“There are students out there that really can benefit from this,” Duffy said. “It’s a matter of getting them comfortable enough to a meeting, and walk in the door, which can be a real tough thing to do. It’s meant to be a comfortable place. It’s them getting support from each other.”
The next three meetings are on Oct. 15, Oct. 29 and Nov. 12 at 3:30 p.m. in Picken Hall, room 122.
This group is not intended to be a substitute for therapy, nor will it be facilitated by therapists or medical professionals. If a student feels like they need professional help, they should contact the Kelly Center in Picken Hall, room 111 or call at 785-628-4401.
Questions concerning the peer support group can be directed to Kenton Olliff at his email, kolliff@fhsu.edu with “Support Group” in the subject line. Everyone is encouraged to come participate or leave as they see fit.
