Instructional Technologist Magdalene Moy presented to the Online Student Government Association (OSGA) during their meeting on Monday.

Moy works for Teaching Innovation and Learning Technologies (TILT) on campus and is the chair of the Generative AI task force that was created last year.

As a task force, they have worked to create an AI Guidance page.

“We specifically decided not to go the policy route because AI is changing so quickly, and policy takes a really long time to go through all the correct committees to get approval for,” Moy said. “We also believe that our academic integrity policy already covers what it needs to.”

Part of the Teacher Guidance draft states that Instructors should be clear with students about expectations for the course as a whole and for each assignment. Additionally, if students are not allowed to use AI for their work, instructors should not be able to use AI for grading.

“If you use AI for any part of feedback or grading it should be transparent with students and that there has to be some sort of human element to the feedback that’s provided,” Moy said.

Moy directed students to the university AI tools. Students have access to Microsoft CoPilot as well as Packback Writing Lab.

“It’s a little bit different from the way that Grammarly might prompt some suggestions, it’s supposed to be less about editing your work and more about making suggestions,” Moy said.

Finally, Moy said that if students do use AI, they are encouraged to cite that usage using the AI Citation Guide

Moy is also working to put together a student AI task force and is looking for OSGA representation as part of that.

“If you’re interested, we’ll have some funding for student projects and some like conference opportunities if anyone’s interested in student generated AI task force,” Moy said.

Three new business items were voted on at the meeting.

First, the Subcommittee Online Meeting Act 2024-2025 was passed.

This act allows subcommittees to conduct business through other means rather than just through Zoom or Google Meet.

“You can have a text message chain or email chain as long as you communicate and you guys do what you need to do and you send your meeting reports to who you need to send it to,” Senate Affairs Committee Chair Benjamin Keliojor said.

Additionally, subcommittee meetings are capped at 30 minutes.

Keliojor also presented the Acknowledgement of Bylaws Form.

The chairs of each committee will send the completed form to Keliojor, attesting that all committee members have read the bylaws and know where to find them.

“This way, we can confirm that everyone knows what we’re talking about when we pick up different things from the bylaws,” Keliojor.

Student Relations Committee Chair Kurt George brought forward an OSGA Survey Funding Request.

As mentioned in the last meeting, the online student survey will be sent out soon. The committee wants funding to incentivize participation.

“We are asking for funds to cover sending everyone that participates some form of participation prize, be it a sticker, pencil, whatever it is, something branded by Fort Hays State University,” George said.

The next OSGA meeting will be at 6 p.m. CST on December 16.
