Going away to college can be a daunting task for new freshmen, and finding one’s way around a new campus presents additional challenges. Fort Hays State University is a campus that offers a wide variety of services for students. Here are some notable ones.

Memorial Union/Fischli Wills

The Memorial Union and Fischli Wills buildings are home to many offices that both freshmen and new students should be aware of. One of the most popular offices in the building is the Center for Student Success, where students can ask general questions about campus and receive helpful information. For those who need a little extra help outside of class, this is also where students can inquire about the free tutoring services offered by the university.

Student Engagement is also where students can ask questions about the various clubs on campus, such as how to get in contact with them and any events those clubs may be having in the near future.

“[We] engage students in service, learning, and activities that engage them on campus and in the community,” Student Engagement student worker Saige Newman said.

In the basement of The Union is the International Student Service/Global Affairs Office, which may be of interest not just to freshmen but also to anyone who is interested in studying abroad. International students can walk in during office hours and ask any questions, and their staff will be happy to help. Whether a student needs help with their visa, or help in selecting a possible career, the International Student Service/Global Affairs office in Memorial Union room 014 will help however they can.

“I believe the International Student Service/Global Affairs Office is important because it offers a healthy and safe environment for both domestic and international students,” Global Ambassador Cory Cimaglia said. “We offer many services, including study abroad programs and any other questions international students may have to succeed in the classroom or in the Hays community, we have many partners from schools across the world, and can’t wait to keep expanding.”

Picken Hall

For students with questions regarding things such as financial aid, scholarships, or other fiscal services, Picken Hall is the place to go. They are the financial head of the campus and take care of a wide variety of tasks. The Picken Hall front desk will direct unsure students where to go.

“We handle all the departmental money on Campus, handling things such as cards for different organizations. We handle most of the financial side of the campus,” Picken Hall Student Worker Nina Malliton said.

Custer Hall

The bottom floor of Custer Hall contains an essential office for those freshmen who are living on campus. It is here they can obtain a parking pass that allows students to park in certain spots on campus. Parking is dependent on the zone purchased and all parking questions can be answered in Custer Hall 112.

McMindes Hall

While living on campus, freshmen may have questions about their living situations, questions such as, “How do I change my roommate?”, “What’s the process for moving to another building?” For this and other similar questions, students can go to Residential Life in McMindes Hall 126 where the staff will be more than happy to assist answer any questions about living on campus students may have.

“Res life provides an affordable, secure, accommodating location for residents to feel at home,” Assistant Community Director Ricardo Lopez said. “Residential life provides a home away from home.”

Tomanek Hall

While students are on campus, attending classes, and doing work, they may have some issues with technology such as not being able to connect to the internet, problems with your Email, or issues with Blackboard. For these kinds of problems, students can go to Tigertech, located in Tomanek Hall 127.

The Tigertech staff will help with any technical problem students might have while on campus. It is important to note that Tigertech is not authorized to do work on a customer’s personal device unless the owner is present.

Sheridan Hall

Sheridan Hall 112 contains the office for student employment for those looking to make some money on campus while they are attending. For students, having an on-campus job that works around class schedules can be beneficial. This is also a great way to help a student obtain working experience when they try to find a job outside of college.

“Student employment assists students in finding on-campus jobs,” Student Employment Specialist Johnae Robles said. “They help you through the hiring process and the work authorization for both local and international students. They complete employment verifications and work through employee relations situations. Finally, they process payroll for all student employees.”
