Creek Side Resort will host an outdoor movie night tonight. Beginning at 9 p.m. “Top Gun: Maverick” will be screened at their current address 3301 US Highway 183 Alt in Hays. The event is free and everyone is welcome to join in.

The outdoor theater is no drive-in theater of yesteryear, but a walk-in theater where guests can sit on lawn chairs or on benches to watch the movie.

“We wanted to make it a drive-in, we just didn’t have enough space for it right now,” said Cheyenne Shelton, the general manager of the Resort. “It’s a walk-in, so people can bring their own lawn chairs and blankets to sit down in.”

There will also be refreshments being served for a price.

“We have a snack shack down by the movie theater,” Shelton said. “It sells any kind of pop. We sell water bottles. And we also sell some alcohol as well.”

This isn’t the first “Flicks at the Crick.” Some of the movies shown during past screenings include “Jumanji,” “Trolls,” “Space Jam,” “Bolt,” “Cars,” “Despicable Me,” “Peter Rabbit,” and “Hocus Pocus.”

“We typically try to show family-friendly PG movies for the most part,” Shelton said. “If we do play anything that’s above that age range, we do make sure that people are aware.”

An example of a movie for older audiences that they have shown would be “Dirty Dancing.”

Aside from this Friday’s screening, further showings are scheduled for September 16, October 6, October 21, and October 28. The last movie that they hope to show will be “Hocus Pocus 2.”

The Resort is also open for using the theater grounds for other venues.

“It was the middle of October last year, [and] we had DoC come out, and they did a concert out here and everything. So, we’re able to do stuff like that as well,” Shelton said. “We had the Hays High football team last year rent out the movie theater for the night. They played their own movie, had their own snacks, and everything like that. We have an option that you can do that as well.”

Creek Side Resort opened up in June of 2019 and is currently in its fifth season of operation. They have been hosting movie events since June of 2023.
