Tumbling, stunts, pyramids, and dance are categories the cheer squads will be judged on Difficulty, technique, timing, and staying clean are other aspects judges look into when determining scores The Fort Hays Tigers competed against two other schools they had never faced before. Newman University Cheer and Southeastern Oklahoma State University also performed at the invitational. “It’s important to recognize that divisions are different and each squad has unique assets that set them apart,” said cheer captain Elizabeth Embry. “We lost a lot of people this season and dealt with a lot of sickness, so people were in and out all season long. We had to be very adaptable and I think we did well for what we were working with,” said Embry. “My favorite part of cheer is being a part of a team,” said Hammersmith. “We bond so much because we’re working hard together and doing things we’ve never done before and it creates such a special connection.” “A lot of people don’t realize the time commitment that it takes,” said Embry. “We’re constantly learning new skills and have people come in that have no background in cheer, so while we’re learning we’re also teaching them. It takes a lot of hard work.” The Tiger cheerleaders perform their big final stunt near the end of their routine. Gross Memorial Coliseum was loud with excitement and support for the cheer squad when they finished their performance. On top of team competitions, the invite also had individual stunt competitions.
