HHS girls win over Abilene

A solid start and even better finish propelled the Hays High School girls’ basketball team to a 41-25 victory Tuesday night at the HHS gym.

Hays High allowed only three points on defense while building a 9-3 advantage after the first eight minutes.

Abilene came out hot in the second quarter. The Cowgirls were able to tie the game at 17 with a minute left in the half, and took the lead by two points with 30 seconds remaining. But the Indians tied the game at 19 apiece entering the locker room.

Hyas High came out with a press and never let Abilene take another lead after intermission. Abilene battled, but Hays High kept the lead by the end of the quarter, 28-22. 

Abilene only scored three more points in the fourth quarter. Hays High was able to stretch the lead by 16 at the final buzzer..

Hays High is now ranked No. 10 in Class 5A in this week’s poll and will face Garden City on Friday.

Jillyan Sheldon led the Indians with 10 points. HHS improved to 11-6 overall.
