FHSU Writing Center opens online consultations

BY ANNISTON WEBER

As of Monday, the FHSU Writing Center has transitioned all tutoring sessions to an online format in order to support students during the campus closure.

The online platform offers two types of consultations: online and eTutoring. Online consultations are real-time video and chat appointments through the FHSU Writing Center website. eTutoring consultations are asynchronous and will allow for a consultant to provide written feedback in response to the writer’s questions about their own work.

The Writing Center further explains the details of each tutoring session on its website.

“Online appointments provide the most similar experience to our usual face-to-face consultations,” the website reads. “eTutoring appointments require the writer to prepare for feedback by using the comments feature of Microsoft Word to ask questions about concerns they would like feedback on.”

The Writing Center asks that students who choose to participate in eTutoring make sure they are not emailing their papers directly to the consultants or to the Writing Center email address. When making an appointment, the option to attach a file will appear — this is where students should submit their paper.

The duration of consultations will remain at a maximum of 30 minutes. Students can make appointments once per day with any available consultant. Follow-up meetings are encouraged for students who might have more questions about their writing.

To make an appointment, log in to WCOnline at https://fhsu.mywconline.com. If you do not already have an account with WCOnline, register with your FHSU email address.
For more information on the different appointment types or how to make an appointment, visit https://www.fhsu.edu/writingcenter/make-an-appointment/online-appointments. The website also has video guides to explain the process of scheduling an appointment and examples of what each tutoring session looks like.
