With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, the FHSU MakerSpace hosted a Maker Wednesday Event this week, where students and faculty made electronic valentines using paper, copper tape, and LEDs.  It was a project designed to be so approachable that participants did not need any skills or background knowledge to complete it.  When people struggled with issues, MakerSpace Coordinator G.G. Launchbaugh and MakerSpace student worker  Ian Henderson were there to provide guidance and assistance as needed.

First, people cut paper into the shapes of their desired designs.  One of the more prevalent designs was the heart shape.  From there, people punched holes so they could slip the LEDs through the paper.  They then attached the copper tape on the back to act as leads for power to flow, and finally attached the LEDs and the coin battery to the copper tape.  Everyone there had a smile on their face as they worked, which grew as their completed projects lit up.

The event also served as a chance to showcase MakerSpace’s new location in the basement of the newly renovated Tebo Library.

“We are finally almost done with moving,”  Launchbaugh said.  “All of the tools that people would need have been set up.”

From the saws and wrenches on the wall to the 3D printers on the shelves, to the soldering irons and screws, the MakerSpace is ready to handle any hands-on projects that students and staff may work on.

The MakerSpace will have more events every Wednesday from 2 to 4:00 p.m.
