This week, the Hays Public Library is bringing patriotic cheer to its young adult patrons with a hands-on craft celebrating “Color Our Country Week.” As part of the 4th of July festivities, teens and tweens are invited to drop by the library and create their own confetti poppers—safe, festive alternatives to fireworks that promise a colorful burst of fun.

No registration is required, and all materials will be provided for this free drop-in activity.

“The ‘Color Our Country’ theme fits perfectly with our 4th of July celebration,” said HPL Young Adult Coordinator Cheyenne Rowe. “Confetti poppers are like mini fireworks, but much safer. We thought it would be a fun, engaging way for young people to celebrate while getting creative.”

Participants will use everyday items like toilet paper rolls, balloons, red, white, and blue paper, confetti, scissors, tape, and glue to build their poppers. The activity is designed for ages 11 to 18, though younger children may join in with adult supervision. Due to the small parts, it’s not recommended for very young children.

However, the library hasn’t forgotten its youngest patrons. Additional themed activities are planned throughout the week. On Wednesday, children can create magnetic art fireworks, and at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, the STREAM Team will enjoy red, white, and blue treats during their program.

“Our goal with this activity is to boost creativity, support hand-eye coordination, and encourage problem-solving skills,” Rowe said. “It’s also a great way to build excitement and awareness for the upcoming holiday.”
