The Fort Hays State University men’s soccer team entered a pivotal weekend of play against two foes near FHSU in the Great American Conference table. The Tigers played Newman, who sat one spot behind FHSU, on Thursday and No. 18 Southern Nazarene, who sits just above FHSU, on Saturday.

FHSU defeated Newman 4-1 and tied Southern Nazarene 1-1 after a last-minute goal by the Tigers.

“The final result today (Southern Nazarene), was disappointing because we had opportunities,” FHSU Head Coach Alex Nichols said. “We played a good team. I am proud of my players, and we learned a lot today. At the end of the day, we were a bit unlucky but I am happy with the players even though I am disappointed with the result.”

Against Newman, FHSU found themselves down early in the 12th minute of the match as Miguel Silveira found the back of the net. The game featured 30+ winds and Newman played the first 45 minutes with the wind at their backs.

The Tigers did not manage a shot in the first half, but playing with the wind in the second half, FHSU took 14 shots with six on goal leading to their four scores. Bastian Carlman opened the scoring for the Tigers in the 48th minute of the match.

Elias Ovelar Semeniuk scored two goals in the span of 27 seconds in the 53rd minute of the match.

“It’s not that crazy, coach always tells us to be focused for the next ball. I appreciate the guys for being opportunistic and putting the ball there for me to create a chance,” Semeniuk said,

Marcos German also scored in the match in the 57th minute. Fort Hays State’s offense had six shots and four goals scored in nine minutes of game action.

Against Southern Nazarene, the two styles of play showed as the Tigers outshot the Crimson Storm 26-7 the entire match.

The first goal of the game came on a counter-attack by Southern Nazarene Junior Duran, who scored in the 10th minute. Southern Nazerene had multiple shots on target that goalkeeper Wouter Van Der Borch had to come out to save. He finished with two saves in the match.

“I was just sharp and ready for the ball, I made myself big and made some big saves. I am happy to get one point for our team,” Van Der Borch said. “I made guys make decisions with the ball, and I just made myself bigger to take away any angle they had.”

For the rest of the match, the Tigers had opportunities but were not able to take advantage until the final moments of the game.

With a minute to go in the match, the Tigers were able to find the back of the net on a goal from Marcos German in the 90th minute.

Fort Hays State moves to (7-3-2 | 4-2-1) on the season. The Tigers will host their last two home matches of the season against Harding on Thursday night and Ouachita Baptist on Saturday. Both matches are set to start at 6 p.m. at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
