DES MOINES, Iowa – Six members of the Fort Hays State Women’s Wrestling team traveled to compete unattached at the Grand View Open this past Saturday (Feb. 3). Four of the six earned placement at their respective weight classes.
Josiah Ortiz was the top finisher among the group, placing second in the Silver 116-pound division. She won four consecutive matches to reach the final, which included a tech fall, a pair of decisions, and a fall. The fall came in the semifinals over Samantha Memmott, the No. 5 ranked wrestler in NJCAA, from Snow College. Ortiz dropped the title match to Trinity Pendergrass of Quincy University by tech fall to finish 4-1 for the weekend.
Piper Cadden and Marissa Porsch each claimed fifth-place finishes in the Gold Division. In the 136 class, Cadden went 4-2 for the tournament. She won her first match of the day by fall, dropped a close decision, then won a pair of consolation matches before a loss by fall pushed her into the fifth-place match where she took a forfeit win. Porsch dropped her first match of the day on criteria in a 4-4 decision, but then bounced back for three-straight wins (two by fall) before a setback against the same wrestler she faced in the opening round. Porsch scored an 8-2 decision in the fifth-place match.
Lila Bloomer placed sixth in the Silver Division at 155. She won three straight matches to reach the semifinals, but then dropped three straight in consolation action. She had a tech fall and a pair of decisions for her wins.
Chloe Mader (Silver 170) and Ashlynn Goodwin (Gold 143) also competed in the tournament. Both went 1-2.
