Fort Hays State University’s Student Government Association is offering transportation to and from the polling site located at Messiah Lutheran Church today.
This polling site serves the first and second precincts of wards one and three in Hays and includes individuals living on campus.
Rides to the polling site will begin at 8 a.m. and will be offered every 30 minutes. The final ride to the polling site will depart at 5 p.m. Students, faculty, staff and community members are all welcome to use this service. Rides will depart from the circle driveway of the FHSU Memorial Union.
SGA has not offered this service in the past, but Student Government President Ella Burrows says that her administration is dedicated to ensuring accessible voting for students.
This access is even more important following the closure of the polling location that used to be at the Extension Office.
“That location was so much closer to campus,” Burrows said.
Burrows hopes that this service further promotes civic engagement and voter turnout.
“It is imperative that all voices within our democracy are heard, and that each eligible voter has the opportunity to have a say in who will make decisions on their behalf,” Burrows said.
Burrows says this also ties in with the mission of the university as a whole.
“The mission of Fort Hays State University is to educate the next generation of global citizen leaders, and my administration is committed to furthering this mission not just in word, but in deed,” Burrows said.
