Track has record-setting day

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Fort Hays State track and field teams saw three more school records go down Saturday (Feb. 11) on day two of the eighth annual Indoor Gorilla Classic. The Tigers tacked on 10 NCAA Division II national qualifying performances on Saturday, giving the teams 17-such marks on the weekend in addition to five school records.

Emily Salmans broke the first record of the day in the 800m run, surpassing her own mark by 1.8 seconds. The senior completed the race in 2:12.80, good for eighth place and a national qualifying mark.

The women’s 4x400m relay team of Lyric HolmanReba MaderTaylor Savolt and Mattie Rossi followed Salmans’ lead a few hours later, finishing second out of 33 teams with a national-qualifying time of 3:46.93. The time is more than 1.5 seconds faster than the previous record set last year and currently ranks 10th nationally amongst all reported marks this season.

The men’s 4x400m relay capped off the eventful weekend by running the second-fastest time in Division II so far this season. The squad of Hayden AlbrightPhilip LandrumEthan Lang and Nolan Churchman shattered the previous record by more than 3.5 seconds, finishing second on the day with a national-qualifying time of 3:11.10.

Holman added a pair of national qualifying times in the 60m dash, running the prelims in 7.63 before placing fourth in the finals with a time of 7.57. Rossi did the same in the 60m hurdles, securing times of 8.70 in the prelims and 8.71 in the finals to place sixth.

A pair of Tigers surpassed the national qualifying time in the 800m run on the men’s side, with Aaron Manganplacing sixth in 1:51.09 and Trever Medina close behind in seventh with a time of 1:51.21. Mangan now sits in fourth on the FHSU DII era performance chart, with Medina right behind in fifth.

The Tiger men added three national qualifying marks in the field, including two in the pole vault and one in the triple jump. Jacob Clark finished fourth in the pole vault after clearing the 16-9.5 bar, while Ryan Stanley was sixth after safely surpassing the bar at 16-5.75. Xavier Robinsoncovered a season-best 47-5.25 in the triple jump, good for seventh place.

Chloe Stanley ran the 400m dash in 58.75, ranking her seventh on the FHSU DII era performance list.

Fort Hays State is slated to wrap up the regular season at the Nebraska Tune-Up next Friday (Feb. 17) before returning to Pittsburg for the MIAA Championships at the end of the month (Feb. 24-26).

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Fort Hays State track and field teams opened the eighth annual Indoor Gorilla Classic with two broken school records, one event victory and seven national qualifying marks Friday (Feb. 10) in Pittsburg, Kan.

The men’s distance medley relay team of Trever MedinaHayden AlbrightEthan Lang and Grant Bradley combined to cover 4,000 meters in a school-record 9:45.59, more than four seconds faster than the previous top mark set last year. The Tigers finished fourth on the day and currently sit in eighth in Division II pending other results from this weekend.

Cross country All-American Regan Hodsden wrapped up the day by breaking her own school record in the 5,000m run, finishing third overall and second amongst DII competition with a time of 17:03.72. The time was more than three seconds faster than her previous high set in December on the same track.

Reba Mader captured the lone event victory of the day for the Tigers, crossing the line first in the 600y run in 1:25.13. The freshman leapt three spots to second on the FHSU DII era performance chart after shaving over 1.5 seconds off her previous season-best.

Albright had a busy day outside contributing to the DMR record, finishing first in the 60m dash qualifying with a personal-best time of 6.81 and placing third in the 200m dash with a PR of 21.65. Both times were national qualifying marks and allowed the sophomore to climb to fourth on the FHSU DII era list in the 60m dash and fifth on the 200m chart.

Philip Landrum crossed the line just behind Albright in the 200m, also beating out the national qualifying time with a mark of 21.68 to place fifth. Lyric Holman finished sixth in the women’s 200m, running in a season-best NCAA DII qualifying time of 24.84.

Mattie Rossi finished 16th in the 200m dash with a personal-best time of 25.13, good for fourth on the FHSU DII era performance chart. Nolan Churchman now sits in seventh on the list in the men’s 200m after running in 21.77, good for 14th. Churchman also matched his PR in the long jump with a national-qualifying leap of 23-4.

Chloe Stanley advanced through qualifying in both the 60m dash and the 60m hurdles, recording times of 7.86 in the sprint and 8.92 in the hurdles. She later recorded a time of 1:27.16 in the 600y run, ranking her eighth on the FHSU DII era performance chart.

Action will wrap up in Pittsburg with day two on Saturday (Feb. 11), with action on the track starting at 11 a.m. and field events opening at noon.
