The 17th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team wrapped up their 2023 dual schedule on Sunday (Feb. 12) with a 27-13 win over Central Missouri inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers led the entire way winning six matches, including two weights left open by the Mules. The Tigers finish the year 3-12 (2-2 MIAA) and went 2-0 in home duals, while the Mules remained winless in duals at 0-6 (0-3 MIAA).
Before the dual began, senior Clint Herrick collected a second period fall in a 157-pound exhibition match.
Kevin Honas put the Tigers on the board with a first period fall at 125 pounds before the Mules took the 133 pound bout in a 5-4 decision. After UCM’s forfeit at 141 pounds, the Mules won the 149-pound match with a 12-1 major decision. Cody Hicks claimed a 6-3 decision in the 157 bout to put the Tigers ahead 15-7 midway through the dual.
UCM won by decision at 165 pounds before fourth-ranked Cade Lindsey claimed a 7-3 decision at 174 pounds. Despite the Mules winning the 184-pound bout by decision, the result of the dual was sealed with UCM’s forfeit at 197 pounds. Tony Caldwell put the icing on the cake with an 8-3 decision in the heavyweight bout.
The Tigers begin preparation for regionals hosted by Chadron State on February 25. The top three placers at each weight will qualify for the national championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 10-11.#17 Fort Hays State 27, Central Missouri 13
