The Fort Hays State wrestling team coasted to a 39-7 win over MIAA rival Newman inside Gross Memorial Coliseum on Sunday (Jan. 29). After splitting the first two matches of the day, the Tigers took seven of the next eight matches, which included three falls and a technical fall. The Tigers improved to 2-11 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA, while Newman fell to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
The Tigers took the lead early as Kevin Honas battled his way to an 8-4 decision at 125 pounds. Newman tied things up with a 3-0 decision by Jevin Foust over Corbin White at 133 pounds. From there the Tigers scored 15 unanswered points. Jacob Mitchell secured the first win by fall at 141 pounds, followed by a 5-3 decision from Drew Burgoon at 149 pounds. The Jets were open at 157 pounds so Clint Herrick accepted the forfeit bring the Tiger lead to 18-3 midway through the dual. Jace Fisher claimed the other win for Newman as he defeated Blaise Ronnau by 12-3 major decision in the 165-pound bout.
The Tigers took the final four matches, all by bonus points. Fourth-ranked Cade Lindsey collected a 9-0 major decision at 174 pounds before Bryce Westmoreland secured a first-period fall at 184 pounds. At 197, No. 4 Tereus Henrygrappled his way to a 16-1 technical fall in the second period and Tony Caldwell sealed the win with a second-period pinfall in the heavyweight bout.
The Tigers have two more conference duals on their schedule leading up to regionals. They will travel to face third-ranked Nebraska-Kearney on Feb. 3 before hosting Central Missouri on Feb. 12.
