FHSU hosts annual Math Relays

The Mathematics and Computer Science Departments at Fort Hays State University hosted the 43rd annual Math Relays on Thursday.

The event, open to students in grades nine through 12, is composed of six different events. Top-three individual winners in each event are listed below.

In the Using Number Sense event, students alternate names for numbers, number patterns, place value, order relations among numbers, estimation, elementary probability and statistics, and reasonableness of results. This event does not allow the use of calculators. 

9th Grade:

1st- Phoenix Cross, Medicine Lodge High School

2nd- Edward Horinek, St. John’s Catholic High School 

3rd- Landon Baetz, Lakeside High School

10th Grade:

1st- Isabelle Jones, Hays High School 

2nd- Caleb King, Hays High School

3rd- Mario Fuentealba, Maize South High School

11th Grade: 

1st- Hannah Simmelink, Rock Hills High School

2nd- Layton Leiker, Ellsworth High School

3rd- Alyssa Harger, McPherson High School

12th Grade: 

1st- Nicholas Greenwood, St. John’s Catholic High School 

2nd- David Doan, Garden City High School 

3rd- Blaise Palen, St. John’s Catholic High School 

The Trigonometry event has students recognize and use trigonometric identities. Students solve triangles, including using the law of sines and cosines and solve equations using trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions. Competition is limited to just 11th and 12th grade students. 

11th Grade:

3rd- Matthew Matteucci, Sacred Heart High School 

12th Grade:

1st- Markus White, Sacred Heart High School

Algebraic Manipulations is another non-calculator event. Students add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials and rational fractions. 

9th Grade:

10th Grade:

1st- Clay Guttery, Osborne High School

Informal Geometry and  Measurement is based on computing perimeters, areas and volumes of geometric figures as well as metric conversions. 

9th Grade:

10th Grade:

1st- Samuel Schroeder, TMP-Marian High School

Application of Algebra, Arithmetic, are sets of word problems with an emphasis on interpreting and solving problems presented in the words rather than symbols. These problems are meant to be applicable in the real world or everyday life. 

9th Grade:

Calculations with Calculators require students to have a scientific calculator with functions that include probability, trigonometry and logarithms, as well as algebraic functions like roots and radicals. All answers are in decimal format or scientific notation.  

9th Grade:

10th Grade:

Scores are also calculated for the top teams in 1A, 2A/3A and 4A/5A/6A classifications.

1st- Osborne High School, 81.5 points

1st- St. John’s Catholic High School, 81.5 points

3rd- Rock Hills High School, 73.5 points

2A/3A School Winners:

1st- Sacred Heart High School, 100.5 points

2nd- Ellsworth High School, 72.5 points

3rd- Minneapolis High School, 44 points

4A/5A/6A School Winners:

1st- Hays High School, 130 points

2nd- Maize South High School, 91 points

3rd- McPherson High School, 73 points

Anthony Arial, a senior at Hays High School, won first in Algebraic Manipulations as well as being part of the winning team for 4A/5A/6A Schools. 

“I’m very happy with how we did both as a team and individually,” Arial said. “I expect to do well so my energy reflects into my abilities.”
