COLBY, Kan. – The Fort Hays State cross country teams wrapped up their regular season at the 2022 Trojan Invite on Saturday (Oct. 15), hosted by Colby CC at Meadow Lake Golf Course. The women placed second out of nine schools, including first amongst the NCAA Division II contingent in attendance, while the men were seventh out of 11 teams.
The women opened the day by placing five runners in the top 17, including two in the top eight. The Tigers racked up 47 team points, finishing behind only Division I Air Force’s 22 points. Regan Hodsden was the top Tiger finisher for the second week in a row, finishing fourth out of 80 runners with a time of 18:12.6 in the five-kilometer race. Darian Hudgeons also placed in the top 10, crossing the line in eighth with a time of 18:30.2. Jaycee Vath placed 14th after completing the race in 19:03.3, while Elizabeth Fender(19:10.1) and Emily Salmans (19:16.9) finished back-to-back in 16th and 17th, respectively.
The men’s squad took seventh with 176 team points, with Jaret Pfizenmaier leading the Tigers to the line in 26:01.7 to place 37th. Lucas Cisneros came in 39th place with a mark of 26:23.3, with Aaron Mangan close behind in 40th after completing the eight-kilometer run in 26:29.2. Javyn Contreras compiled a time of 26:41.7 to finish 44th, while Trever Medina rounded out the FHSU top five in 47th after crossing the line in 26:47.5. Air Force also took the men’s team title with 40 points, one better than host Colby CC.
The Tigers will head into the postseason in three weeks when FHSU travels to Joplin, Mo. for the MIAA Championships on November 5. The men will kick things off with an 8K championship at 10 a.m. before the women follow with their 6K race at 11 a.m.
