Two champs for women’s track at MIAA

By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s track and field team finished fourth at the 2022 MIAA Outdoor Championships with 82 team points, tied for the program’s best finish at the outdoor league meet. The Tigers picked up two more event victories and four All-MIAA performances on Sunday (May 8), giving FHSU three MIAA champions and five All-MIAA honorees for the week.

Lyric Holman and Alexandra Hart both added another MIAA Championship to their trophy case. Holman won the 100m dash by a mere .003 seconds with a time of 11.57 for her fourth league title. Holman later placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.02 to add five more team points.

Hart grabbed her third MIAA title and her fourth All-MIAA honor with another win in the high jump. The sophomore cleared the 5-7 bar on her second attempt, one fewer attempt than Pittsburg State’s Erica Schamel to give Hart the win on a judge’s decision. Summer Kragel contributed five team points with a fourth-place finish in the high jump after clearing the 5-5.75 bar on her second attempt.

Mattie Rossi contributed 13 team points in the hurdles races after placing fourth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.77 and placing second in the 400m hurdles after crossing the line in 59.09. She broke the one-minute barrier in the 400m race for the second day in a row after becoming the first Tiger in history to do so in Saturday’s preliminary round. Her second-place finish was good for her third-career All-MIAA award.

Addie Berens collected All-MIAA honors for the second year in a row after placing second in the javelin with a personal-best toss of 154-4. Rhyann Brown added a pair of team points in the javelin competition after finishing seventh with a top mark of 146-0.

Chloe Stanley picked up a pair of team points after finishing seventh in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:06.32, while Taylor Savolt added one point with an eighth-place finish in the triple jump (37-1.25).

The Tigers added seven points between the two relay races, placing seventh in the 4x100m relay with a time of 47.07 and fourth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:46.52.

Pittsburg State captured the team title with 145 points, with Central Missouri coming in second with 117.5 points.

The Tigers are next scheduled to compete at the Loper Twilight next Saturday (May 14) in Kearney, Neb. before heading to Allendale, Mich. May 26-28 for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
