HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Fort Hays State’s Morgan Brasser had a career day on Tuesday (May 3), posting her first sub-par round as a Tiger with a 1-under 71 in round 2 of the 2022 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships. The sophomore climbed 10 spots in the individual standings, moving into a tie for fifth place at 3-over with 18 holes yet to play at the Park Course at Hot Springs Country Club.
After a bit of a slow start led to a round of 4-over 76 on Monday, Brasser began the second round with a birdie on the par-5 first hole Tuesday. She slid to 1-over for the round with a double bogey on the 8th hole before circling a pair of fours on back-to-back par-5s on the back nine. The Andale, Kan. native finished the round with 14 pars, three birdies and the lone double bogey.
Thanks to three birdies on the par-5s on Tuesday, Brasser now ranks second in the field on the long holes for the week at 2-under. She is tied for fourth in par-3 scoring after recording a par on all four short holes for the second day in a row.
Brasser’s six birdies through 36 holes are tied for fourth-most in the 51-player field.
Gracen Blount of Henderson State sits atop the player leaderboard at 3-under for the week after a score of 4-under 68 in round 2. Susana Olivares is second at 1-over, while two players are tied for third at 2-over, one stroke in front of Brasser.
Henderson State moved to the top of the team race after an even-par 288 on Tuesday, moving them to 13-over for the week.
Nine teams and six individuals make up this year’s regional field. The top three teams and the top two individuals not on those teams will move on to the National Championship May 10-14 at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga. Brasser is currently one shot back of the second individual spot
Brasser’s third and final round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning (May 4) off hole No. 11.
