NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – Fort Hays State picked up its second win over Bethel College during the 2021-22 season on Wednesday (Apr. 20). The Tigers defeated the Threshers by a score of 6-1, which is the same score they won by during the fall portion of the season. Fort Hays State took two of the three doubles matches to earn the first team point, then won five of the six singles matches to secure the team win.
In doubles play Heidi Lubbers teamed with Fiorella Mendez at the No. 2 position for a 6-4 win, and Nicole Heyn teamed with Aliyah Frederick at the No. 3 position for a 6-3 win. At No. 1, Irina Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz were on the short end of a 6-4 result.
Four of the five wins for FHSU in singles play were in straight sets. Paz Diaz yielded the fewest games to her opponent at the No. 2 position, winning 6-0, 6-1. Frederick (No. 5) and Heidi Lubbers (No. 6) both won 12 of the 15 games within their matches, Frederick winning 6-3, 6-0, and Lubbers 6-2, 6-1. Alfonso took her No. 1 singles match by scores of 6-2, 6-3. At No. 4 Fiorella Mendez won her match by a third-set tiebreaker game, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6). Heyn was the only Tiger to come up short in singles action, but went to a third-set tiebreaker game as well.
Hope Lubbers and Gracen Friess teamed for an exhibition win in doubles. Friess won an exhibition singles match, but Lubbers came up just short in her singles exhibition.
The Tigers will close out their 2021-22 season on Saturday (Apr. 23) when they host Missouri Western at 3 pm in Hays.
