FHSU SGA preparing for annual Big Event

BY ALICIA FEYERHERM

For the 11th year, Fort Hays Student Government Association is hosting the Big Event on April 30.

Originating at Texas A&M in 1982, the Big Event is a one-day volunteer event that aims to help local communities.

“The Big Event is a day dedicated to completing various service projects throughout Hays,” Student Government Association Community Relations Director Chloe Stanley said. “ Projects that have been done in the past are cleaning BIg Creek, picking up trash around campus, cleaning out different office spaces and apartments, things like that.”

Fort Hays is one of 125 campuses nationwide that organizes a Big Event.

Two volunteering sessions are available. The first session is from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with a break for lunch, catered by Chartwells. The afternoon session is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Students can sign up for both sessions if they wish.

As CRD, Stanley has been working to secure sponsors for the event. These sponsors will help fund the supplies needed for the projects. Stanley has also been locating projects and promoting the event.

Currently, 40 volunteers have signed up and 5 projects have been submitted. Stanley’s goal is to have 150 volunteers at the event.

To sign up, fill out the volunteer form found on TigerLink

“Technically, there aren’t deadlines, but we do encourage kids to sign up as soon as possible because it makes lining up projects with volunteers easier,” Stanley said.
