Tennis posts second-straight shutout

LINDSBORG, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 6-3 overall on the season with a 7-0 win over Bethany College on Thursday (Mar. 24). It was Fort Hays State’s second-straight shutout to open the spring, and second shutout of Bethany this season. Fort Hays State won all nine matches contested on Thursday.

The Tigers picked up the first team point by winning all three doubles matches. The No. 3 team of Heidi Lubbers and Hope Lubbers won by a score of 6-1. The No. 1 team of Irina Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz, and No. 2 team of Aliyah Frederick and Kylie Aufdengarten each won by scores of 6-3.

Both Diaz at the No. 2 position and Aufdengarten at the No. 6 position shut out their opponents in singles play, winning 6-0, 6-0. Alfonso at the No. 1 position and Nicole Heyn at the No. 3 position each yielded just one point to their opponents, winning 6-0, 6-1. Frederick won by scores of 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 position and Fiorella Mendez won by scores of 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 position.

Gracen Friess played an exhibition singles match and won 8-1, while Hope Lubbers also played an exhibition match and won 8-0.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday (Mar. 26) at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo., then continue their MIAA road trip at Washburn on Sunday (Mar. 27).
