The FHSU football team wrapped their season on Saturday with a senior day celebration prior to their game against Pittsburg State. In addition to honoring the football team’s seniors, band, cheer and Tiger Deb seniors were also honored. Pitt State knocked off the Tigers, 34-24.
The game started out with a bang as Pitt returned the opening kick return to the house to start the early shoot out. The scoring didn’t end for the first quarter as Fort Hays’ Keylan Chapman knotted up the game at 7-7. Pitt and Fort Hays then exchanged passing touchdowns.
Pitt marched down the field to score again to push the lead to 21-14. The Gorillas and Tigers added a field goal to their scores as Pitt still held the lead at 24-17.
Pitt State took the opportunities given to them as they scored two more touchdowns to go up 34-17. The Tigers had a last ditch effort to score one final time in the season as Chance Fuller ran the ball in to score.
“We had our chances, and when you throw a couple picks and don’t score touchdowns, missing field goals…that has been our season, we are just a few plays here and there and it costs us the game.” Head Coach Chris Brown said.
Fort Hays ends the 2021 season at 5-6 on the year. With wins over Lincoln, Missouri Southern, Nebraska Kearney, Central Missouri and Northeastern State. The Tigers did end their eighth straight winning season with the loss to Pitt.
“This offseason we will see what happens with guys, if they want to put in the effort or not but we need to get back to the Tiger football way. Because this season is not acceptable for those standards.” Brown said.
