Women’s soccer comes up short against No. 5 Hornets

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State Women’s Soccer team came up short on Sunday (Sept. 26) to No. 5 ranked Emporia State by a score of 1-0. The Hornets jumped ahead early on a breakaway opportunity and both teams struggled to find shot opportunities on a very windy day. The Hornets improved to 7-0-1, 1-0 in the MIAA, and the Tigers are now 3-2-3 overall, 0-1 in conference play.

The Hornets found the net in the 10th minute as Mackenzie DiMarco made a fast break with the ball down the middle and placed it into the bottom right of the goal past Deonna Wellbrock for the only score of the match. The Hornets outshot the Tigers 8-3 and the Tigers were only able to put one shot in target late in the match. Wellbrock recorded two saves in the match compared to one by the Hornets. The Tigers will be back in action at home on Friday, October 1 in another MIAA contest as they host Central Oklahoma at 6 pm.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Fort Hays Women’s Soccer team’s match at Washburn in Topeka on Friday (Sept. 24) ended in a 1-1 draw. Both teams managed to score early in the first half, but never found the net again over the final 86 minutes of action. The Tigers moved to 3-1-3 overall and the Ichabods to 4-1-1.

The Ichabods struck first as Tera Lynch found the net in the 4th minute of the match, working her way through the back line of the Tiger defense for a one-on-one opportunity. The Tigers responded with a goal in the 24th minute as Hannah Mares received a nice crossing pass from Cailey Perkins and put it in the net for her first score of the season. The second half and pair of 10-minute overtime periods did not produce any scoring, but the Tigers were able take 11 shots of their 14 shots after halftime. FHSU won the overall shot battle 14-12. Keeper Deonna Wellbrock recorded six saves to bring her season total to 34.
