EMPORIA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State men’s cross country team finished second at the Emporia State Invitational on Friday (Sept. 24) at Jones Park. The Tigers tallied 36 points in the team standings thanks to four runners finishing in the top nine.
Robbie Schmidt was the first Tiger across the line, placing second after completing the eight-kilometer race in 24:57.86, less than nine seconds behind the leader. A trio of Tigers placed seventh through ninth, all crossing the line within 10 seconds of each other. Erick Estrada was seventh with a time of 26:28.92, with Jaret Pfizenmaier close behind in eighth after crossing the line in 26:33.05. Aaron Mangan was next across the finish line, placing ninth in 26:37.69. Javyn Contreras rounded out the top five for the Tigers, placing 18th with a time of 27:03.47.
Emporia State placed first with 27 team points. Hornet Matthew Maki won the race with a course-record time of 24:49.04.
The Tigers’ next race is scheduled for Saturday, October 9 when FHSU hosts the Tiger Open at Sand Plum Nature Trail in Victoria, Kan. The first of four races will begin at 9 a.m.
