TOPEKA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State men’s track and field team posted four provisional marks Saturday (Feb. 27) on day one of the 2021 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Tigers also had six individuals advance to Sunday’s finals while FHSU earned team points from four different performances.
Philip Landrum posted the best time in the 60m dash prelims, crossing the line in a personal-best 6.80 to improve his provisional mark. He also advanced to the finals in the 200m dash after running the fifth-best time in 21.84.
Matthew Pieper grabbed the Tigers five team points after a fourth-place finish in the long jump, clearing the NCAA Division II provisional mark with a leap of 23-7.5. Pieper also sits in second through four events of the heptathlon with 2,913 points, 25 in front of the pace he set when he broke the school record earlier this season.
The Tigers picked up 10 team points in the pole vault competition after Ryan Stanley placed second to earn All-MIAA honors. The junior cleared a height of 16-9.25, improving his season-best and provisional mark by .5 inches. Jacob Clark also got the team two points with a seventh-place finish, clearing the 15-9.25 bar.
Ethan Lang (1:11.82) and Kaden Wren (1:11.97) finished 1-2 in the 600y run prelims to advance to Sunday’s finals. The Tigers will also have a pair of middle distance runners in the 800m run finals after Caleb Carrasco finished first in 1:54.02 and Aaron Mangan finished third in 1:54.27.
The distance medley relay team of Joshua Doria, Wren, Lang and Grant Bradley combined for a time of 10:06.39, good for fourth place.
Nolan Churchman (5th, 2,753 points) and Jack Pakkebier (7th, 2,624 points) are also in position to accumulate team points for FHSU in the heptathlon through four events.
The Tigers will wrap up the event Sunday (Feb. 28), with the multis wrapping up at 11 a.m. before the field events begin at 1 p.m. and running events to go off at 2 p.m.
