Law enforcement: Accidental gunshot kills Hays man


The victim of an accidental gunshot was found dead in Ellis County on Friday afternoon.

According to a press release by the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, “On Friday, February 26, 2021, at 03:21 PM Hays Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a vehicle parked in the 2000 blk of 200th Avenue, Ellis County, KS with a passenger laying next to the vehicle. The reporting person didn’t believe the subject was breathing.”

72-year-old Raymond Nieman of Hays was found lying outside of his car with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Nieman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office along with 23rd Judicial District Coroner Lyle Noordhoek determined the death as accidental as all evidence indicates Nieman was securing his shotgun in the back of the vehicle when it accidentally discharged.”
