Hosts take the stage at Virtual Open Mic Night, more events on the horizon

BY CJ GIBSON

While half a dozen students did attend the Virtual Open Mic Night hosted by Student Engagement last week, the promise of a free t-shirt to all participants did not sway the audience into sharing their talents. But rather than disappoint those who joined the Zoom call last Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m., the co-hosts, Sean Engler and Serena McCown, played a few songs.

The two alternated solo performances, Engler playing guitar and McCown playing ukulele.

Engler sang the songs “Machines” by Biffy Clyro, “Guiding Light” by Mumford & Sons, “I Know How to Speak” by Manchester Orchestra, and “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol.

McCown sang “Let It Go” by James Bay, “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles, “Fly” by Maddie & Tae, and “Hey Soul Sister” by Train.

Spectators were supportive despite the atypical performance environment by clapping at the end of songs and sending encouragement through the Zoom chat.

Near the end of the event, one FHSU student, Leo Harzman, did join in, performing a dramatic reading of the beginning of the Bee Movie script.

Despite the little showing this time around, Student Engagement does plan to try another Virtual Open Mic Night in the future.

While the opportunity to join Virtual Open Mic Night may be passed, Student Engagement is still holding many more free events for students. This week, keep an eye out for virtual homecoming challenges on Student Engagement’s social media pages.

On Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m., Pete Dunlap and Student Engagement will be holding a virtual presentation about Digital Wellness.

Student Engagement is also hosting Novels for Hope, a virtual book club on Oct. 6 at 5:00 p.m. The first 30 students to sign up via TigerLink will be provided a free copy of the book to be discussed: Things I’ve Learned from the Homeless by Glen Dunzweiler.

McCown encourages future performers to keep up with Tiger Link and Student Engagement’s social media pages.

“Tell [your friends] to get their acts ready!”
