Kennett, Hobbs, Barbieri earn MIAA honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team had three student-athletes selected to the All-MIAA team, announced Tuesday (March 3) by the league office. Kacey Kennett earned a spot on the second team, Jaden Hobbs was named to the third team and Belle Barbieri picked up honorable mention status after their performances throughout the 2019-20 season.

Kacey Kennett earned All-MIAA honors for the third time in her career after picking up second team accolades as a junior and honorable mention status as a sophomore. The senior averaged 12.3 points per game, scoring in double figures 15 times. Kennett averaged 5.5 rebounds per game, second most on the team. She led the team with 55 steals, seventh most in the MIAA. The Olathe, Kan. native scored a season-high 22 points three times, eclipsing 20 points four times throughout the year. She hit 41 3-pointers on the year, burying at least one from behind the arc in all but five contests. Kennett became the 21st Tiger to score 1,000 points at FHSU, currently sitting in ninth on the all-time scoring list. Her 172 made 3-pointers are tied for second most in program history.

Jaden Hobbs played her way onto the third team after averaging a team-high 12.8 points and 4.6 assists per game. She leads the league with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.13 while ranking second in assists per game. Hobbs scored in double figures 19 times during the regular season, including 18 of the last 22 regular season contests. She dished out a season-best nine assists three times. The junior scored 14.3 points per game in league action, 10th most in the conference. Hobbs buried 45 3-pointers this season, including seven long-range makes in the regular season finale when she scored a career-best 29 points, the most for a Tiger this season.

Belle Barbieri is an honorable mention selection for the second year in a row after recording an MIAA-best 10 double-doubles on the year. The senior averaged 10.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, ranking second in the conference in rebounds. She blocked 25 shots on the defensive end, eighth most in the conference. Barbieri hit a team-high 53.8 percent of her shots this season, giving the Abilene, Kan. native a career field goal percentage of 56.4, third best in program history. She scored in double figures 18 times while grabbing 10 or more boards 13 times.

Fort Hays State will open postseason play Friday (March 6) when the Tigers take on Pittsburg State in the MIAA Quarterfinals. First tip is slated for noon inside historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
