The FHSU Tiger volleyball team got off to a fast start Friday night against the Southern Baptist University Bearcats, taking the first set – 25-19.
After that, SBU took the next two sets by a combined difference of just five points (2nd set 27-29; 3rd set 22-25).
The Tigers soon regained the momentum and won in dominating fashion in the fourth set 25-13, which gave them all the confidence they needed going into the 5th.
With outstanding performances by Azlyn Cassaday’s 16 kills and Breann Becker’s 40 assists for the night, the Tigers closed this one out 15-10 in the fifth set.
The victory boosted the Tigers’ overall record to 7-15, but more importantly, this was their first conference win all season (1-9).
After the game, Fort Hays State volleyball head coach Jessica Wood-Atkins said this was one of the more complete games her team has played.
“I am very pleased you know, that was a complete team win. We had a couple things happen in that match. One of our outsides rolled her ankle and we put a sub in for her in the back row. We left our setter in because she was just having a good tempo with our hitters and some other people had jumped in,” Wood-Atkins said. “I mean, we’ve mixed the lineup like we haven’t done before, they adjusted well and they did exactly what they needed to do.so, that was a perfect team win.”
The Tigers knocked off Missouri Southern State on Saturday night in four sets, improving their record to 8-15 (2-9 MIAA). FHSU will be back in action tomorrow night when the #2 University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers come to town. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Gross Memorial Coliseum.
