Fort Hays State Softball heads on the road this week for a pair of MIAA doubleheaders at Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State. The Tigers are looking to stay mathematically alive for the MIAA Tournament with six conference games remaining on their schedule. FHSU enters the week 11th in the MIAA standings and the top eight make the conference tourney at the completion of the regular season.
The Tigers take on Missouri Western at 4 pm on Thursday in St. Joseph, then head to Northwest Missouri State on Friday for a 2 pm doubleheader in Maryville.
Fort Hays State enters the week 7-13 in MIAA play, two games back of eighth-place Nebraska-Kearney at 9-11. The Tigers and Lopers play the same opponents this weekend on the road before meeting each other in the last conference doubleheader of the season Apr. 21 in Kearney. Lindenwood and Missouri Southern sit between UNK and FHSU in the standings, both at 7-11.
To stay alive, the Tigers will need to channel some positive vibes looking for their first win away from Hays since February 10 when they defeated St. Edward’s in a neutral site game in San Antonio. Fort Hays State is 2-23 away from Hays this year, still searching for its first conference road win this season (0-8).
Grace Philop leads the Tigers with a .343 batting average. Bailey Boxberger leads the team in extra-base hits with 12 and RBI with 23. Sara Breckbill is the team leader in home runs with five. In the pitching circle, Hailey Chapman leads in ERA at 4.59, while Sierra Rodriguez leads in wins with six.
