Late Thursday afternoon, students and staff gathered at the Memorial Union Patio on the quad to begin their march to main street.
The marching band began playing as the group walked toward mainstreet, being led by Victor E. Tiger, prominent community members, and the university’s cheerleading team.
The march is hosted by the Downtown Hays Development Corporation and the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau. Students are asked to participate in this event to meet business owners, receive coupons for the different shops downtown, and also to be given a free meal provided by a popular restaurant in town.
Emily Corbett, a freshman attending NCK Technical College, says that the March 2 Main is an event every student should attend because it “helps us get familiar downtown and meet the townspeople.”
Similarly, Mykeltie Horting, a freshman at Fort Hays State University, mentioned that “it was a great time to see all of the local businesses and people while celebrating Fort Hays State.”
The March to Main is not just an event for the businesses to promote what they have to offer, but it is a great event for students to learn more about the town that they now call home.
