Losing Streak Continues

October 28 2012, that was the last win for the Fort Hays State Volleyball (0-9,0-4 MIAA) as they dropped their 13th straight dating back to last year.

“Once we start winning some games, I think we will start winning a lot of them, but right now, we are just going through the motions,” head coach Kurt Kohler said.

Fort Hays battled in St. Joseph, Mo trying to pick up their first win of the season, but were only able to grab one set from Missouri Western State University losing 3-1 (22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 21-25).

“Everybody wants it so bad,” senior Jenna Ulrich said.

The Tigers goal was to limit runs and momentum swings and improve defense as the Tiger’s opponents have the highest hitting percentage against them in the conference.  It took Fort Hays to the decisive third to get a set win.

In the fourth set, the Griffons opened on an 11-5 to run that the Tigers were not able to overcome.   Fort Hays chewed away at the lead and pulled within one at 22-21, but a late three straight point surge from Missouri Western cost the Tigers the match.

Ulrich led the team with five blocks and was second in kills with seven.  Junior Taylor Mares led the squad with 13 kills and sophomore Mallory Flaggor chipped in 11.  Seniors Makenzie Weinman and Madison Schwartz led the defensive front for Fort Hays each with 11 digs.

Saturday the Tigers will be at home trying to end the losing streak against Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe, Northwest Missouri State University at 3 p.m.
