HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team wraps up the regular season this weekend (May 5-7) with a trip to Maryville, Mo. to take on Northwest Missouri State. The three-game set gets underway at 3 p.m. Friday before a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday and a 1 p.m. matinee Sunday.
The Tigers sit at 10-36 this season and 3-30 in the MIAA, while the Bearcats enter the final week of the regular season 28-18 overall and 16-16 in league play. NWMSU is one half-game out of the eight spot in the MIAA standings, the final spot to advance to the conference tournament. The Bearcats defeated Fort Hays State in a neutral site, non-conference game to start the season in Alva, Okla., 4-2.
Northwest Missouri State leads the all-time series, 26-22. The Bearcats hold a 14-6 advantage in games played in Maryville.
Ty Redington extended his current hitting streak to nine Tuesday evening, his third streak of eight or more games this season. Senior Nick Hammeke needs just seven assists to tie the all-time record in FHSU history (476, Brian Keck, 1993-96).
The strength of the Bearcats is their pitching staff, sporting the second-best ERA in the MIAA (4.11). Starter Anthony Caenepeel anchors the rotation with a 3.02 ERA and more than one strikeout per inning (94 K, 86.1 IP). Quintin VanAckeren leads the team with a 2.41 ERA out of the bullpen.
