HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team matches up with a familiar foe Thursday (Feb. 16), traveling to Tahlequah, Okla. to play Northeastern State at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers defeated the RiverHawks just one week ago inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, 77-44 (Feb. 9).
The Tigers head into the penultimate week of the regular season 18-6 overall, going 9-6 in MIAA play with four games remaining on the schedule. The RiverHawks have lost 10 games in a row, coming in at 6-17 this season and 2-13 in the league. Fort Hays State is currently tied for sixth in the MIAA standings. Two wins would clinch a home game in the first round of the MIAA Tournament, with a bye to Kansas City still within reach.
Fort Hays State leads the all-time series, 8-3, including a 2-2 mark in games played in Tahlequah. The Tigers are 8-2 against the RiverHawks under Tony Hobson. Fort Hays State has won seven-straight games in the series, the longest winning streak for either team.
Tatyana Legette is coming off a strong week, averaging a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) in wins over the two MIAA Oklahoma schools. The sophomore is now second on the team in scoring, averaging 9.5 points per game this season. Leading scorer Jill Faxon (11.8 ppg) will move into 13th on the all-time scoring list at FHSU with her first point Thursday (1,156 points).
The RiverHawks are led by Rylie Torrey, who averages 16.7 points per game. The sophomore scored 21 of her team’s 44 points against FHSU last week, hitting 6-of-10 from the floor with the other seven players combining to shoot 20 percent (8-of-40). NSU is last in the league in rebounding, grabbing just 32.9 boards each night. Fort Hays State outrebounded the RiverHawks 56-26 in the win last week.
The Tigers will wrap up the weekend in Edmond, Okla. with a date with No. 18 Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
