Fort Hays State had a solid showing in their first indoor meets of 2016. Half the team went to Kearney, Nebraska to attend the two-day UNK Charlie Foster Pre-Holiday Classic on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 9-10), while the other half went to Manhattan, Kan. to participate in the K-State Winter Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 10).
In Kearney, freshman Mariah Hammersmith turned in a solid performance in her first collegiate meet and won the triple jump at 36’10.5″. Another freshman, Kylie Poague did well in her first event with a fourth-place finish in the pentathlon finishing with 3,233 points. The number was converted to 3,264 for the track size, putting her just 21 points shy of attaining a NCAA provisional mark. Selam Ball took home third place honors in the pole vault, jumping a height of 11’1.75″ on her fourth attempt, also just a bit short of a provisional mark.
In Manhattan, Kelly Wycoff set a school record in the 300 meters. Wycoff, who broke her old record of 40.89 set last year, claimed third place with a time of 40.83 seconds.
The Tigers will take some time off for the holidays but jump back into action on Saturday (Jan. 21) when they head back to Kansas State for the Deloss Dodds Invitational.
