HAYS, Kan. – After defeating Emporia State just over a year ago for the first win over a top-ranked team in program history, the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team will have the same opportunity Saturday (Dec. 10) when the Lady Hornets again come to town ranked first in the nation. First tip inside Gross Memorial Coliseum is set for 2 p.m.
After outlasting Washburn in overtime on Wednesday, 67-64, the Tigers carry a 7-2 overall record into the weekend, including a 1-2 mark in conference play. The Lady Hornets are 9-0 this season, winning their first conference game Thursday against Nebraska-Kearney, 75-50.
Emporia State leads the all-time series, 46-30, including a 19-17 edge in games played in Hays. The Tigers are 4-13 against the Lady Hornets under Tony Hobson, with three of the four wins coming at home (3-5).
Seniors Jill Faxon (11.2 points per game) and Nikola Kacperska (10.7 ppg) lead a balanced Tiger offense that features seven players scoring eight or more points per contest. Kacperska also leads with 3.4 assists per game, good for 10th in the conference. Tatyana Legette grabs a team-high 6.9 rebounds per contest while Emma Stroyan blocks a league-best 2.4 shots per game.
The high-powered ESU offense is led by Kelly Moten, who is tied for seventh in the conference with 17.0 points per game. The senior also dishes out a team-high 4.4 assists per contest. Sophomore center Tiana Moala paces the team with 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.
