PUEBLO, Colo. – Fort Hays State Women’s Tennis split a pair of matches on Saturday (Sept. 10), moving to 1-2 overall on the season. The Tigers fell in a morning match to Metro State University of Denver by a score of 8-1 before defeating Colorado College 6-3 in an afternoon match for their first win of the season.
Metro State 8, Fort Hays State 1
Just like the first match of the season on Friday, Lauren Lindell was the only Tiger to gain a point in an 8-1 loss to Metro State. She took her match at No. 3 singles by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 over Emily Kerr. Nicole Lubbers nearly picked up another point for the Tigers, falling in a three-set match at No. 4 singles. She took the first set 6-3 before falling 6-1 and 10-7. All other singles matches were straight-set wins for Metro State.
The No. 3 team of Alina Villalovos and Laura Jimenez-Lendinez made the most noise in doubles, falling 8-4 in their match.
Fort Hays State 6, Colorado College 3
The Tigers took two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches to claim their first win of the season, defeating Colorado College.
The two wins in doubles action were tightly contested as the No. 2 team of Nicole Lubbers and Jessica Johnson won 8-5 and the No. 3 team of Alina Villalovos and Laura Jimenez-Lendinez won 9-7. The No. 1 team of Natalie Lubbers and Lauren Lindell lost 8-5.
All singles matches ended in straight sets. Jessica Johnson took a barnburner first set at No. 5 singles, winning a tiebreak 16-14. She went on to take the second set 6-3. Lauren Lindell won at the No. 2 position 6-1, 6-1. Natalie Lubbers won at No. 3, 6-3, 7-5. Haley Weidemann took the No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-1. Jimenez-Lendinez fell at No. 1 by scores of 6-3, 6-2, and Nicole Lubbers fell at No. 4 by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
The Tigers return home to play an exhibition match with Barton (Kan.) Community College on Wednesday (Sept. 14) at 3 pm.
