A Day Dedicated to Helping Hays: The BIG Event

The city of Hays has been a wonderful host to Fort Hays State University — many businesses, residents, and community organizations have played vital roles in helping the university flourish to become what it is today. With that being said, every year FHSU’s Student Government Association dedicates a whole day of service to give back to the city of Hays to thank them for making Hays a home away from home for many students.

On April 30th from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm, volunteer groups will be working around Hays to help with various projects including but not limited to yard work, community clean up around Big Creek and I-70, painting houses, organizing, facilitating events, and gardening.

Students from all majors, clubs, classifications, and organizations participate in The BIG Event. SGA’s Community Relations Director, Lizette Avalos says, “if students take the opportunity to volunteer I believe they can gain more than they give. It is something that they can’t do in a typical classroom; through service, students have the ability to learn new skills, meet friends, and give back to others.”

Students who participate in The BIG Event are eligible for scholarship drawings. Registration to volunteer and suggest a project can be found at FHSU Student Government Association under the resource tab.
