One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history, and just like years past, Fort Hays State University is joining the movement. On February 16th, at 7:00 in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center, the Women’s Leadership Project is inviting everyone to come learn more about the movement.
The FHSU Tiger Deb Dance Team, as well as other local dancers, will be dancing to show respect for women and girls who have been affected by violence, a lack of education and being victims of poverty. FHSU students and the community are invited to come watch the presentation and participate with the dancers to raise awareness.
The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime.
“As a freshman I’ve never been but I’ve heard great things. I’m really interested in women’s rights and I can’t wait to see what this event is all about” said Annie Potter. The Women’s Leadership Project brings in speakers along with the dance groups to share their stories and experiences with the group.
In the month of February people across the world come together to express their outrage, strike, dance, and rise in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women. In 2016, the theme of Revolution continues with a call to focus on marginalised women and to bring national and international focus to their issues; to bring in new artistic energy; to amplify Revolution as a call for system change to end violence against women and girls; to call on people to rise for others, and not just for ourselves.
