This meeting of the Student Government Association was called to order on Thursday, October 29th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Black and Gold Room, Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University.
Legislation
Old Business: There was no old business at Thursday’s meeting.
New Business: The first reading of Bill/15/F/107 – Appropriations was read.
Reports
Executive:
President Ulises Gonzalez apologized for his absence last meeting. He shared that he met with the military friendly committee and they will be doing a Veterans table at the Memorial Union on Monday from 8:00 am to 10:00 am and Tuesday 11:00 am to 1:00 pm to honor our veterans. He talked about how he participated in the “Meet Your SGA” show again to talk about the gun survey and he highly encouraged the senate to take the survey and let the other students know about it. Additionally he shared that Chamber Chats was Friday at 9:00 am.
Vice President Molly Morgan shared that she will be emailing everyone about the college advisory councils on which members will get together on December 3rd to discuss issues happening in the College of Business and Arts and Sciences as well as other perspective colleges.
Treasurer Jacob Taylor informed everyone that their polo shirt order arrived and cost $22.00. Additionally he handed out 2015-2016 annual reports to everyone in the room.
Chief of Staff, Lauren Wiebe, congratulated senator Brandt for joining the SGA conference with the executive board on November 7th. She attended the second Tobacco meeting and announced that on July 1st 2016 the FHSU campus will be completely tobacco free. The Tobacco committee has been approved to set out yard signs that will have information about the new tobacco policy.
Campus Relations Director, Rebecca Vincent, thanked everyone for all their help on Tiger Week. She met with the University 101 Reconstructing and Developing Committee to restructure Freshman Seminar classes. She also met with the University Student Relations Committee and talked about success week to change the stigma of dead week. She announced that Senator Spotlight is Sen. Arnberger.
Legislator Affairs Director, Cade Megaffin mentioned that the Higher Education Day application is available and is posted on the SGA website. He discussed how Tiger Day is still in progress and will keep everyone updated on any new information.
Committee:
The appropriations committee did not meet but still had a bill up for its first reading.
The Senate Affairs Committee discussed the Executive Staff Review. This is for senators to meet with their executive staff and know what their intentions are for the association. They also have a bill up for its second reading.
The Student Relations and Involvement Committee did not meet, but they did attend the Cultural Competency meeting along with the Campus Relations Director.
Legislative and Political Action Committee is reviewing a proposal that has been submitted. Additionally they met with Undergrad Research Experience as well as Student Study Abroad to gain some further details about the aspects of the proposal.
Installation of New Members
No new members were installed at this meeting.
Speakers/Open Forum
Senator DeVore and Senator Brandt discussed the definition of a pledge and the preamble of the constitution and modifying it for the pledge in the SGA meeting.
Announcements
The following announcements were made at the meeting:
American Democracy Project is hosting a ceremony on November 11th at 10:00 am in the Sheridan Hall Lobby.
Alpha Kappa Psi, SHRM, and UAB are co-sponsoring Morris Morrison to speak in Cody Commons at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, November 18th.
There is an event to make bracelets at the Evening at the Hadley Center on November 7th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
There will be an event for Jana’s Campaign on November 7th from 2:00-5:00 in the Memorial Union.
Senator Arnberger discussed a beauty pageant for Kansas natives and to contact her if interested.
